It's that time of year again! Turkey is cooking, Christmas lights are lining the building and plans are being made for every relative you've ever met to come visit. Ahh, the holidays! It also means that school is almost over! That's the best part, honestly.
The fall semester always seems like we're just jumping from one break to the next, even more so as these final weeks tick away. Unfortunately, in between Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks we have finals. *cue scary music* As such, every professor likes to pile insane amounts of homework onto us that need to be accomplished in this little amount of time. So, how do we get to enjoy our break and prep for finals? It seems a hard task, since a stressful activity such as homework doesn't really help relax on our time away from school.
There's a simple solution for this: time management. Now, personally, this isn't my strong suit. There's always something more fun to do, especially with a younger brother who owns every XBOX game that came out in the last two months and already gloats about how much fun they are and how good he is at them...punk.
My weakness for movie theaters and time with high school friends also rears its ugly head whenever I go home. So, yeah, homework rarely gets done whenever I'm break, which results in my having to come back to campus early to pull an all-nighter on Sunday. Who wants to do that? None of us.
But we do. The Student Center is packed out almost every Sunday, full to bursting after an official break. How do we break this cycle and actually get to sleep before class on Monday? Again, time management.
A good way that I've found to accomplish the things that I need to do, as well as the things I want to do is to make a schedule. Plan out your trip and schedule times for different activities. For example, homework can be done in the morning, friends seen in the afternoon and family in the evening. If you can do this, and stick to it, giving yourself time to accomplish homework, your breaks become a lot more productive, instead of just lounging around and gorging yourself on mom's cooking. I mean, that will happen too, but you'll be productive so it's less depressing.
What do you think? Is this is a helpful idea or do you just hate the idea of working on a break? Do you have any tips or strategies to stay productive? Comment and let me know!
Ah, definitely feeling the connection here as I finally get around to spending the rest of my reluctantly-yeilded Thanksgiving Break on homework. I don't know as anyone likes working during holidays, but hopefully most people will wake up and realize it's necessary. This coming from the girl who slept until 12 today, but hey! I've been working since then. :) I like your blog style and content. Will be reading more. :)
ReplyDeletei agree, there has to be time management when on break. other wise you will be left with nothing but homework at the end and that is never fun. I try to plan out my days accordingly, yes i want to be lazy and have fun but there is a time a place for that and sitting down to finish what you need to do can be very hard. making a scheduale on what you need to be doing is a good way to go, but following it will be another. I really think it is up to the individuale to push themselves to know what they should or should not do at the time.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the schedule. I definitely agree, creating a schedule is important to time management. Of course, if you are a chronic procrastinator (not speaking from experience, no sir, not me), you often find yourself having to schedule creating a schedule... and then scheduling creating a schedule...
ReplyDeleteOf course, after you finally create your schedule, you find yourself with the teeny little problem of actually sticking to it.
I agree that creating a schedule is very helpful and most important but i never plan or create a schedule. I usually just take all my hw home and everyday of the break I do some type of work. The only day i take off and do nothing is the Day of Thanksgiving. I just refuse to work on a holiday lol, i just love to relax and enjoy family. by doing work all through the break and just take that one day off i usually get the majority of my work done. Even though i have never created a plan or schedule i might try it and see how it works for me. GREAT POST!!!
ReplyDeleteUhg, I can totally relate to all of this. I hate that I procrastinate, but I procrastinate none the less. :( Your idea about making a schedule does seem like it will be helpful though, I'll have to try that next time I make a weekend trip back home. Thumbs up! I look forward to reading more of your tips!
ReplyDeleteI respectfully disagree with the post because I forget about school totally if at all possible on every holiday because they are breaks from school not time to catch up on work. Not saying I don't do stuff over the break but if I can finish before or after I will. Because holidays are time to catch up with friends and family we have enough school time the rest of the weeks why with our holidays to.
